Can I claim my health fund?

In 2019, the Government made natural health ineligible for health fund claiming which included Pilates for fitness purposes. If however, you're attending Pilates classes with a goal in mind (eg. walk longer, pain relief etc.) and you're under the instruction of a physiotherapist then you're able to claim. If this sounds like you, we would need you to come in for an initial Pilates consultation with a phsio and also 6 monthly review. We also maintain records of your progress. This is a great way to have an individualised program and get the most out of Pilates.

What exactly is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of low impact, rehabilitative exercise designed by a German known as Joseph Pilates following World War 1. Joseph would use the bed springs of wounded soldiers to keep their limbs strong and help them rehabilitate war wounds. The movements that you would normally do in daily life (push, pull, squat etc) are called compound movements, this essentially means there's more than one joint and muscle group at work. Pilates breaks down movement into its individual parts to then build difficulty and complexity into whatever goals you may have (which are often compound movements). This often involves learning how to use the inner, stabilising muscles before the external, power muscles.

This can be really useful in the following situations:

  • To build isolated muscle strength

  • To build muscle stabilisers for pain relief

  • Strengthening after pregnancy and childbirth

  • To change movement patterns and biomechanics

  • To rehabilitate an injury or specific area of the body.

Pilates is often a great starting point when you're planning on getting into strengthening and conditioning. If you'd like to know the difference, read this blog.
